Oh the weather outside is frightful and right now downright awful on your hair. Experts say that harsh weather (extreme cold) can strip the cuticle or outer most layer of the hair strand. This makes the hair break easier and be more susceptible to dryness and static. Unfortunately we can’t hibernate like the bears until the weather improves. Here are some great tips to help keep your tresses looking great during the winter months.

Take it easy on your hair, especially when it’s wet. Your hair can be easily damaged due to the extreme cold. Especially if your hair is dry, you’re more likely to get breakage. So here’s what you do. Protect your hair after showering by spraying ends with a leave-in conditioner to help make the strands bend easier when combing. Don’t go crazy towel drying either. Rub your hair gently when towel drying. Otherwise if you don’t, you’ll get more split ends.

Don’t shampoo every day. Even if you feel like your head gets greasy more than the average person, don’t shampoo daily. Why you ask? Shampooing every other day helps you maintain your natural scalp oils. This helps keep your locks healthy and less vulnerable to breakage. Experts’ advice on days when you don’t shampoo, rise your scalp and massage your scalp with your fingers. This will help gently clean your scalp and the massage will help increase blood flow to your locks which also helps your tresses. If you are one that can’t deal with the thought of shampooing regularly, you should try washing your hair with a conditioner Olea Conditioner ($25.00). This conditioner changes the texture and appearance of your hair with Extra-Virgin olive oil, restore dry and damaged hair and give it a healthy sheen. Our natural formula gives you immediate results by adding moisture to your hair and allows you to enjoy a long lasting softness. Our Olea conditioner transform dull lifeless hair to stronger, shinier and healthier hair.

Smooth your hair’s cuticle. Dry, jagged hair cuticles make your hair look dull and lack luster. Ending your shower with a cold-water rinse and/or your blow-dry session with a blast of cool air (most dryers have a cool setting) can help smooth and seal the cuticle. Also look for products with labels that contain words like “illuminate” or “shine.” In addition to that, when you are using curling irons, look for irons that are made of high quality materials such as titanium and tourmaline. These materials heat up evenly and are less damaging to the hair. Check out: Brilliant TOURMALINE Ceramic 1” Hot pink and Volume curling iron – Special 13-19mm Pink. Nourish tresses from the inside out. What better way to combat Old Man Winter than with Mother Nature? Eating healthy is very important especially in the winter time. Vegetables and minerals help your skin and hair look its best. In addition to that, natural, intensive moisturizers like aloe, jojoba or avocado oils, and Shea butter (found in moisturizing shampoos and conditioners) can hydrate and revitalize the driest strands. Be sure to also drink a lot of water. Water will help your body and your locks not to be dehydrated.
