Protect yourself (head to toes!) from the sun this summer

Summer is just around the corner. This means, swimming, hanging out on the beach and spending time outside. Now more than ever is a great time to pick out sunscreen for yourself. Why should you be thinking about sunscreen? Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to wrinkles that will stay with you for the rest of your life and possibly Skin Cancer. This is becoming a major epidemic across the globe.

According to the Environmental protection agency, “Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S. than new cases of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. “Last but not least, the scariest statistic, “one of 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. “

So now is the time to protect yourself. With so many sunscreen’s on the market, which one should you choose and why?

You want to select a sunscreen that you will use often, not just in the summer. With so many sunscreens on the market, which one should you choose and why? Look for a sunscreen with an SPF rating. This means sunburn protection factor, which is a gauge of the products effectiveness against sunburn-causing ultraviolet B (UVB Rays). A good rule of thumb is the longer you are outside the higher your SPF should be.

Another item to look for on sunscreen is whether or not it is considered Broad Spectrum. This is a term that means that the sunscreen has been noted as being effective in protecting skin against UVB & UVA rays. Both types of skin rays can contribute to Skin Cancer.

You want sweat resistant so when you are exercising the sunscreen won’t get in your eyes and will stay on your skin. In addition to that, if you spend a lot of time at the pool, you will want to make sure you pick up water resistant sunscreen. Your ultimate goal is to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun which creates wrinkles and leave you at risk for Skin Cancer.

Mineral sunscreen is considered to be a more natural sunscreen. What’s great about this is that the zinc or titanium dioxide sunscreen is that it deflects the sun from the skin. Keep in mind you will pay a bit more for this type of sunscreen and there are fewer brands to pick from. Tip: If you have sensitive skin, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunscreen is perfect for you.

On the other side of the spectrum, chemical based sunscreens made of Avobenzone, octocrylene, octinoxate absorb UV Rays and then releases them. This type of sunscreen has been popular for decades. This sunscreen is less expensive than the natural mineral based sunscreen and there are more options available on the market.

Whichever type of sunscreen you choose, be sure to wear it regularly. Be on the lookout for changes to your skin such as growths, irregular moles, etc. If you see anything on your skin that wasn’t there before or has changed drastically, schedule an appointment with a Dermatologist. Stay safe and have fun this summer.
